  • How To Avoid Google Penalization And Manual Web Spam With Guest Blogging?

How To Avoid Google Penalization And Manual Web Spam With Guest Blogging?

Google did that again; unleashing web spam and search ranking penalization to not one but two major websites.

When I saw that news on Twitter, I knew that the search engine world is changing and damn, it is changing rapidly.

Matt Cutt’s said previously that we should be careful and not abusing guest blogging. While many took that seriously, there are still some who continue doing it.

But hey, they aren’t wrong and they are probably doing everything by the book.

As usual, Google is known for breaking things that works and penalized two sites from the face of search engine (literally). MyBlogGuest was nowhere to be found on Google front row pages and Portent Inc. who went from page 1 of Google to page 60.

Words from Ann Smarty on Twitter:

And Ian Lurie from Portent Inc.:

So, what the @#$% is wrong with them or Google?

At the moment, the only confirmed updates are MyBlogGuest is a huge guest blogging sphere while Portent Inc. is a popular marketing agency. And the only linking between both Portent Inc. and MyBlogGuest is that they (Portent Inc.) have several guest posts published on MyBlogGuest.

Words on the street are that MyBlogGuest’s database is affected but until this get verified, it will remain as a mystery, shall we?

We all know MyBlogGuest and it is managed by the popular Ann Smarty. For me, MyBlogGuest is a great place for knowledge and for many, it is a huge filled with knowledge.

Another question that comes to this is that does link building is more important that content quality, length and another dozen reasons more we have always been doing?

Yes, go figure and tell me what you think using the comment form below.

The discussion about guest blogging effects
What do you think about guest blogging?

So, what is guest blogging all about?

Guest blogging is a ‘feature’ where webmasters of certain domains would allow other bloggers to submit or publish their posts on the site. This is a win-win situation where webmasters would be able to maintain the freshness of the site while the guest bloggers would get at least one backlink to their own blogs.

Personally, this is one of the greatest link building technique where you are able to get quality links and building your authority at the same time.

While this is close to a completely white hat link building technique, many bloggers are (indirectly) abusing the link building cycle. This means that you can literally gain as many backlinks as possible even if your website is below par … as long as you are constantly submitting guest posts.

Therefore, excessive guest blogging would lead to many Google penalization and as well as manual web spam.

Ultimately, this leads to the next question.

Excessive guest blogging causes Google penalty and manual web spam

Question: Should you continue to submit or accept guest blogging?

Do it if you wish ‘¦ but do it with moderation.

Guest bloggings are meant to be quality and probably one of your best article creations with hours of hard work put in it.

Don’t just submit your article to a dozen websites but instead, submit just a handful of articles to the right and related websites.

    1. Before submitting guest blogging (checklist and tutorial)

If you want to submit articles to websites, make sure you are providing quality articles. Most of the time, majority of the blogger would say that they are submitting top notch quality and a simple read through will know that those are really bad.

If you are putting a high bar and expectation on your own guest blogging, you need to raise it even higher now.

Search engine is changing and it is getting tougher!

    2. Before accepting guest blogging

If you happen to accept guest blogging, don’t panic. Here are things you need to do in sequence:

    • Check each articles for dead links and low quality posts
    • Contact the guest blogger and ask if he or she would like to update the post(s)
    • Repeat and rinse these steps on a monthly basis

While this is extremely time consuming, the effort taken would benefit you in a long run; avoiding yourself from being penalized by Google.

What to do if you found manual web spam notification on Webmaster Tool?

If your blog is PageRank 2 and below … plus, guest blogging isn’t your main backlink method, then you should be just fine.

However, let’s say Google really hates you and you get a manual web spam notification. On average, it would take place immediately in terms of ranking effects but I usually see them in action between 3 to 7 days.

So, this means that you have 72 hours (minus the sleep) to rectify it immediately. It doesn’t take you long but here are the steps you need to do:

    • Use backlink checker tools such as AhRefs, MajesticSEO or SEO PowerSuite to get a list of all your backlinks
    • Export them into an excel form or format
    • Check each link that is linking back to your website and do it with cautions (this means that even a single backlink to your site should be ‘˜flagged’)
    • Copy those domains into another excel tab and check for their PageRank, Domain Authority, Page Authority and anchor texts linking to those domains
    • Separate them into three lists such as Safe, Moderate and Dangerous (if you notice any domain is at risk of being penalized, place them in the Dangerous list)
    • Contact each of the webmasters in the Dangerous list and ask for amendment in guest post or remove the links
    • You should keep an eye on those domains in the Moderate list and if there any change in ranking (weekly basis), you can decide to move them to Safe or Dangerous list respectively

Help! I am lazy and I don’t have the time, but I don’t want Google to penalize my blog

Okay, the above 7 steps are not one-time jobs. Instead, those are your daily to-do lists to be honest.

Guess what? Among us, there would be those who have thought about going shortcut.

Example: How about I send the full list of Dangerous to Google Disavow directly. Would that be faster?

Honestly speaking, that would be not faster but lighting fast.

But wait! There’s a downside of this and a huge one to be honest.

Imagine you send the list of domains on a weekly or monthly basis to Google for disavowing. Have you ever wonder what Google will think about you?

    1. You are plain lazy
    2. You are doing black hat SEO and in a rush to clear all your bad links
    3. Trying to come clean when you are not (or even if you are)

I would always go against using Google Disavow tool unless you have really tried to contact the webmaster of the site simply because it doesn’t matter how much white hat SEO you do, Google will still try to find your mistake (here’s my case study).

And in most cases, Google will consider you guilty until proven otherwise. Ouch!

How to solve Google web spam issue?
Okay guys. We need a contingency plan to counter attack Google … NOW! ~ President Obama

So, what’s the new SEO strategy you should be using now? Some Q’s & A’s:

Should I be submitting my guest blogging? ~ If you are doing it heavily, cut it down or reduce the numbers.

As I have over 100 guest posts, do I need to be worried? ~ Yes if you are submitting to random sites. No if you are selecting guest posting sites like choosing your husband or wife.

What should I do if my blog has a lot of guest posts? ~ Start checking all your blog posts and the links in them. Remove which ever are low in quality.

What do you think the future of guest blogging?

While I would say this event has changed everything we know about guest blogging, there is still no reason why we should doubt the ability of guest blogging.

The problem would lies in us where we tend to abuse the search engine ecosystem and indirectly, creating a huge loophole for unnatural link building.

Do you have any thoughts about guest blogging? Tell me what you think using the comment form below.

  • Top 10 SEO Tools And Plugins You Will Ever Need In 2014

Top 10 SEO Tools And Plugins You Will Ever Need In 2014

There are a lot of tools in the SEO industry and over the years, we had learned that these SEO tools are used more than just increase website ranking; majority of us use these SEO tools for analytics and data collection.

Last year itself, we seen the departure of specific data which we use dearly for ranking a website and this made us extremely vulnerable when it comes to planning our godly SEO strategies.

SEO in 2014 would be slightly different from previous years as we will be facing extra challenges … which is collecting the right data. This is why it is important use the best search engine optimization tools to get the job done.

A quick rundown on Google and you may find dozens of tools out there but just like a majority of us, you will most likely puzzled and wondering which is best and of course, save you the most money (a.k.a. easy on your wallet).

This post is long and thus, bookmark this for future reference. By the way, have you checked out 2014 SEO tips from 21 industry experts?

You could easy get your hands on free SEO tools (and plugins) like Yoast SEO for free or premium ones that could easily cost hundreds of dollars monthly.

Either way, you need to find the best combination for all your SEO needs and honestly speaking, free online tools doesn’t always make the cut.

There is nothing called as the best SEO tools. The best are always the tools which best fit into your SEO strategy.

In this article, I will be sharing my search engine optimization strategy using various free and paid SEO tools which are divided into several categories:

    1. General research
    2. Competitor research
    3. Keyword research
    4. On-page SEO
    5. Rank tracking

I got to admit that the above might sound a little challenging especially if you are just a novice blogger. As much as I recommend you to have a list of tools at your own disposal, make sure you are financially ready as some of these tools are really costly.

Top 10 SEO tools for 2014

Top 10 SEO tools for 2014

    1. General research tools

    • Google Webmaster Tool
    • Google Analytics

The above are my first go-to tools when it comes to SEO planning especially when I am doing SEO services for my client.

These are tools which gives you the first sugar coating for your SEO strategy. Consider it as the base of your project.

    Google Webmaster Tool

Google Webmaster Tool is one of the best and free SEO tools 2014

Powered by Google, you must be out of your mind if this is not one of your SEO tools for 2014!

Google Webmaster Tool gives you an idea on:

    • HTML improvements
    • Search queries
    • External backlinks
    • Manual spam action
    • Crawl error

Under 30 minutes, you would be able to determine factors affecting your website ranking and possibly keywords which your website are ranking on search engine.

One of the best SEO tips is to ensure your website is SEO-ready even before you start engaging in any projects.

A huge part of Google Webmaster Tools are focused on on-page SEO and thus, it is always good to ensure your site is physically ready for any SEO plans.

    Google Analytics

Google Analytics is one of the most important tools when it comes to SEO analysis

Another power SEO tool which is powered by Google and is in fact, one of the best tools out there when it comes to providing analytics data.

Google Analytics (some call it GA) offers truck load of stats and data for your ‘digestion’. GA fit nicely into my best SEO tools 2014 with the Search Engine Optimization feature (Acquisition > Search Engine Optimization).

In this category, you will be spoilt with not one but three important stats which are Queries, Landing Pages and Geographical Summary.

Geographical Summary is only useful if you are running SEO campaigns based on locations.

While Google is fond of removing even more data from various tools, both Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools are still able to provide sufficient information which will affect your overall SEO strategy.

    2. Competitor research tools

    • Ahrefs
    • Majestic SEO

If you are thinking of ranking your website, it is a no brainer that you need to know who are your competitors. A friend of mine did told me that ranking the website is easy; All you need is to do ‘that’ slightly better than your competitor and you have the edge already.

Competitor research tools are used to understand how your competitors get their ranking and reverse engineer it until certain extend. This means that forget about copying exactly but instead, focus in building something better or more explosive than theirs.

    Ahrefs

Why is Ahrefs used by dozens of SEO experts?

My personal favorite due to looks and user interface. Seriously.

Ahrefs provides better analytics data especially when it comes to finding external and internal backlinks. As much as Ahrefs is great for checking on your own site, I uses it to check on my competitor.

My overused features would be anchor text, domains and top pages.

With just the above 3 information, I could easily determine (roughly) what are my competitor’s SEO strategy and how it is working out for them.

The only issue with Ahrefs is that the free account comes with limited SEO requests and reports. To solve this, you may opt for the premium plan which starts at $79 per month.

If you are running an SEO agency, Ahrefs is one SEO tool you must have in your arsenal.

    Try Ahrefs for free today.

    Majestic SEO

Majestic SEO is one of the most popular tools when it comes to SEO

The direct competitor to Ahrefs and I had used Majestic SEO for over 2 years now.

Data from Ahrefs itself is not enough and thus, I merge them (on Excel) with the data collected from Majestic SEO.

Basically, Majestic SEO offers pretty much as what Ahrefs (and a dozen more SEO tools out there) in terms of features. However, since Majestic SEO and Ahrefs use different methods to measure the data, it is a great move to have a wider data.

Just like its competitor, Majestic SEO offers free accounts and premium ones would start from $42 per month.

Create a free account with Majestic SEO.

    3. Keyword research tools

    • Google Keyword Planner
    • Long Tail Pro

Debate all you want; keyword research is still important when it comes to SEO.

My keyword research strategy lies in several phrases and tools such as general keywords and specific, long tail keywords.

While choosing the right keyword is one thing, using the keyword(s) is another important task as well. This is probably why I uses not one but two SEO tools just for keyword research.

    Google Keyword Planner

Find the ebst keywords using Google Keyword Planner

Every keyword research strategy starts from here. Google Keyword Planner or GKP in short provides a list of keywords which we can use to rank our website.

Not only that, you can also use GKP to search for keywords your competitors are trying to rank as well. You may refer to this article which I wrote about Google Keyword Tool but the concept is very similar to the current Google Keyword Planner.

All you need is Excel and copy-pasting all the information into the list and sort them out. After sorting, you would have around 500 relevant keywords to kick start your SEO campaign.

For bloggers or content writers who are tight in budget, GKP is free and thus, is definitely the top 5 SEO tool for majority of us.

    Long Tail Pro

Long Tail Pro is an important SEO tool for keyword research

Personally, I consider Long Tail Pro or LTP as an advance version of Google Keyword Planner. You can search up to 10 keywords at one time and check for the competition level.

Long Tail Pro is a great SEO tool as you can easily save hours in keyword research. With data collected from Google Keyword Planner, you can easily minimize the list into several high value keyword groups to increase the chances of ranking.

This is easily done by Long Tail Pro as it provides competition analysis and keyword ranking as well. With a one time fee of $97, this is an absolute must for bloggers and niche writers.

You may refer to my Long Tail Pro review or jump directly into the official website for more information.

    4. On-page SEO tools

    • Scribe SEO
    • SEOPressor

One of the SEO best practices is to ensure your website is optimized for SEO.

Ring any bells? This is what we call on-page SEO, folks.

While having SEO agencies or consultants might be not an advisable plan for startups and small time bloggers,  there are two tools which I would highly recommend when it comes to on-page SEO.

So, what is on-page SEO means?

Basically, it means using the right keyword density, utilizing the correct markup and to get some serious love from search engine bots.

    Scribe SEO

Scribe Content takes on-page SEO analysis to the next level

If you think that my keyword research stops after using Long Tail Pro, you are absolutely wrong.

Scribe SEO is my next go-to SEO tool for composing blog posts. Basically, Scribe SEO provides a comprehensive research and analytics for you.

It works in a 4- steps procedure:

    1. Checking the chance of ranking for that specific keyword (competition analysis)
    2. Upon completion of blog post, it will analyze the keyword density by comparing not only that blog post but as well as the whole website to determine the chance of ranking on search engine
    3. Provide a list of recommended tags to use
    4. Recommending a list of external and internal links to build backlinks

Once you have completed the steps above, your blog post would be nearly to perfect in terms of keyword density and indirectly, improving the chance to rank on search engine.

Scribe SEO (some call it Scribe Content) price starts at $88 per month and this is a must-have SEO tool in 2014 if you are serious in dominating the SERPs.

Did I mentioned that this is managed by the guys from StudioPress?

Take Scribe SEO for a 30-days trial run or grab your free SEO report here.

    SEOPressor

SEOPressor is the most affrodable SEO tool for bloggers

One of the biggest issue with keyword research tools like Scribe Content is that they are pricey. Therefore, say hello to SEOPressor.

SEOPressor is one of the most popular SEO plugin for WordPress users simply because it provides features such as:

    • On-page SEO analysis
    • Keyword suggestions
    • Over optimization check
    • Rich snippet
    • LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) suggestions
    • Social SEO
    • Automatic internal linking
    • Video embedded suggestion

With pricing starts from $47, there is absolutely no reason for you to complaint that it is expensive or you are not affordable for it.

Personally, SEOPressor is a great alternative to Scribe SEO as it provides great value and SEO features with a one-time payment.

Double your traffic under 14 days using SEOPressor or money back guarantee!

    5. Rank Tracking tool

    • SEMrush

When it comes to SEO planning and strategy, tracking and monitoring keywords play vital roles.

Blogging is always a business and you need to think like an SEO strategist to compete with your competitors. This means that you need to plan not one but multiple SEO marketing strategies to achieve results.

Tracking tools are extremely important when it comes to SEO keyword strategy. Looking at the above, you will notice that a huge chunk of your time are used to find quality keywords for your site.

And the next step is to ensure your hardwork pays off.

So, if you are not tracking your keywords now, you better do it right now!

    SEMrush

SEMrush is a great SEO tracking tool

I got to admit; SEMrush isn’t the best tool for tracking keywords. The main purpose of SEMrush is to track Google Adwords keywords.

However, you can actually use this to your advantage … yes, by tracking related keywords on your blog.

On a free account, you can create up to 10 keywords for tracking. I usually set up long tail keywords. Choice of keywords can be taken from Google Analytics, Google Keyword Planner, Google Webmaster Tools or any research tools of your choice.

SEMrush will then populate the keywords which you are planning to rank and the stats will be updated once every day.

And you might be wondering, “Okay, I am lost. How can SEMrush possibly be one of the best SEO tools available to mankind?”

Allow me explain a little more in detail.

SEMrush is one of the SEO tools for 2014 as I consider it as an all-in-one SEO software that monitors nearly everything. For example, it offers:

    • Organic research
    • Backlink checker
    • Keyword research
    • Position tracking
    • Domain vs domain
    • Rankings

I do know a few serious (and experienced) bloggers who use SEMrush to cater for all their SEO needs but personally, I use it for organic research and position tracking only.

You can sign up for a free SEMrush account here. Paid accounts start from $69.95 per month.

All in one SEO tool – SEO PowerSuite

SEO PowerSuite is a very powerful tool for SEO research and monitoring

When it comes to search engine optimization, it is really hard to find a good SEO tool that does everything for you. As a matter of fact, I used to think that it never exist.

With so many SEO tools out there for us to choose, we are often wondering which is the best and worth our money.

    Sounds familiar?

I bet it does.Okay, I admit it. Call me a plugin or SEO tool freak. My love for them will never fade.

    Introducing the almighty, SEO PowerSuite.

SEO PowerSuite (some call it SEO PS) is probably the most expensive single piece of SEO tool I ever bought in my life.

So, is SEO PowerSuite worth it?

While SEO PowerSuite is just one piece of SEO tool, it actually consists of several parts (or features):

    1. Rank Tracker
    2. Website Auditor
    3. SEO Spyglass
    4. Link Assistant

Yes, 4 features which can skyrocket your SEO campaigns in 2014.

    Rank Tracker

One of the top 3 ranking tools I ever use. Extremely useful (and fast) when it comes to following up on your keywords rankings. If you are planning to do mass keyword ranking check or multiple domains, it is best to use private proxies to avoid temporary ban from Google.

While it offers a whopping keyword ranking check on over 346 search engines, I only check on Google, Bing and Yahoo for obvious reasons.

    Website Auditor

When a client of mine ask for SEO services, this is the number one tool I use to check for on-page SEO. If you want to check ever corner, worm hole and tiny 404 errors, this is one tool you need to use.

Trust me when I tell you this is one of the best website auditing tool I ever … ever used!

    • Want to check if your robot.txt is working? Done!
    • Want to build robot.text but no idea how? Do it with Website Auditor!
    • Want to check if your website have crawl issues? Done!

Don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to hard sell Website Auditor (okay, maybe a little) but seriously, this is seriously one bad-a*s tool to use.

The only issue you may face is that when you are generating a report for every tiny bit of problem with your site, it could take hours. My longest experience was 18 hours.

    Go figure!

    SEO Spyglass

If you want to know what your competitor is doing, what keywords are they trying to rank for or even, anchor texts they are using, this tool will tell you everything you need to know.

SEO Spyglass = Backlink checker. Period!

    Link Assistant

Link Assistant is a powerful … and not so powerful tool.

If you are using it correctly, you can easily turn Link Assistant into a Virtual Assistant that does all your link building works, emailing etc.

And of course, if you have no idea what it is all about, then you are probably not going far with this tool.

In short, Link Assistant is a management tool that helps you to:

    1. Store data (all your links) in a bullet proof, nuclear resistance ‘space’
    2. Tool to verify backlinks
    3. Reach out to webmasters for link building opportunities

SEO PowerSuite comes in three plans:

    • Free
    • Professional
    • Enterprise

For me, I am using Enterprise version as I need to export data for further usage.

What is your favorite tool when it comes to search engine optimization?

Always remember that one of the best SEO tips for 2014 is to use the right tool for the right job. There is absolutely no point using a specific tool if you have no idea how to utilize it.

So, what is your go-to SEO tools that you must use in 2014? Tell me using the comment form below!

21 Industry Experts Share Their SEO Tips For 2014

Interesting read: Looking to start webinar this year? Check out Webinarcare to learn more! Back in November last year, I shared 4 SEO tips you ever need in 2014 and I asked myself, how can I further enrich the information especially for my readers?

Just like you, I wanted more … I wanted to know more (in terms of opinions) on what SEO will be like. With Google algorithm changes faster than we can even cope up, I knew the best way was to seek assistance from various SEO experts.

The mission was launched late December 2013 and I started contacting over 80 experts to get their opinions. I was determined to get the mission rolling (bear in mind it is my first ‘experts share’) and I was willing to blackmail them for the godly information.

Okay, a little aggregation I would say!

Nonetheless, it took longer than expected to get it worked out but yes, finally it is all done. Out of 80 experts, 21 of them came back with positive response (which I highly blame myself for the bad timing plus the long holiday period).

Some say SEO in 2014 is changing and others say it just got much harder. What’s your take on this?

Basically, I tried to make it as simple as possible where only two questions were asked:

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

    2. If you are required to recommend an SEO technique to both novice and professional bloggers, what would that be?

    Adam Connell

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

I don’t think it’s going to be radically different to what we’re doing right now, although for some there will be a huge difference.

Those that will notice a big difference will only be those that are using outdated tactics in what they believe to be ‘˜fresh’ ways to stay under Google’s radar.

It will end badly for them and the unfortunate truth is that some of them will be leading their clients down a dark path that will cost them a lot of money to get out of (or they may not be able to at all).

So for the rest of us, do what we are doing – keep on adding value for our users with engaging and magnetic content along with more earning, but it’s important to remember that there is more to this content marketing thing than just clicking publish.

Understand your audience, solve a problem they are having and tell them about it – if you don’t have much reach then it means heavy promotion. Simply put going where your target audience is actually works – don’t rely on SEO, although it shouldn’t be ignored. Utilise social media, niche social bookmarking sites (not those ‘˜socialbookmarkingyoururlforseo.com’ type sites, I mean sites like BizSugar and Inbound.org – niche social networks that people read) along with online communities and niche forums.

If you have some budget then you can get some great results from content recommendation systems like Outbrain – forget Facebook ads or anything like that, get targeted traffic from sites like Fast Company and Rolling Stone Magazine for as little as 0.05$.

Remember that you need to spend a significant portion of time promoting your content and by putting in the time you will be able to get more eyeballs on your content without an established audience.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Influence marketing – a lot of experienced SEO’s will probably think of this as ‘˜ego baiting’.

Find people in your market sector or niche that have a big following and ‘˜influence’ – then find a way of tapping into their audience. You’ll find that a large chunk or even all of their audience will be interested in what you have to offer.

It’s all about relationships and here are a few ways to do it:

    • Follow them on the social networks they are active on
    • Comment on their status updates
    • Comment on their blog
    • Share their content (and tag/mention them)
    • Link out to a blog post (and tell them about it)
    • Help them out with something (nice guys/gals finish first, don’t let anyone tell you different)
    • Involve them in your content (this exact blog post is a great example of it)
    • Invite them to chat on Skype or a Google Hangout (you’ll need to have an existing relationship for this to work usually, so don’t open with this right out of the gate)
    • Meet up with them at conferences
    • Arrange 1 on 1 meetings

Daniel Cristo from Triberr recently wrote a great post on Marketing Land that I’d seriously recommend that you read.

Most importantly remember that it’s one thing to build up these relationships with market influencers, but you need to do what you can to maintain them.

Influencer marketing is a powerful tactic that will help you get some great results if you do it right.

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

In 2014, just like 2013 quality content will rule and it is the one of few points which I don’t think will ever be on less priority in Google’s algo.

Apart from site speed and responsive design, authorship will be something on which Google was not paying much attention and nor it was taking much part in website’s ranking but guys be ready for it.. Authorship will be one of few top points those will take important role in ranking during 2014.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Use some already proven SEO plugins for WordPress, which can make your on-page SEO easier and more beneficial and remember the title of famous story. Slow and steady wins the race. The moment you will start thinking to speed up the monetization of blog, you will get vulnerable to Google hit.

Google hates unnatural way of monetization and SEO techniques. So avoid it.

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

2014 should be an interesting year for SEO. However, despite the Panda and Penguin updates, and the changes brought about by Hummingbird, the death of ‘traditional’ SEO has been greatly exaggerated. Keywords and title tags still matter – Google still needs to understand what your page is about – and backlinks will continue to be the most influential of all signals of relevance.

Content Marketing will continue to play a prominent role in SEO, however, there will be a movement towards in-depth quality article writing rather than a concern over frequency of posting.

Social media will continue to play an important indirect role in SEO in that it will continue to be the best way to share your content, and to meet and engage others that will help share (and maybe link to) it. I agree with many in the SEO industry that believe social signals will become an important influence over Search Engine ranking in the future, but from my own experience with my clients, and the research that I have read, I think that its importance as a direct SEO influence right now is often over stated.

Trends towards ‘local SEO’ and the importance of mobile search will continue to grow and play greater roles in the future.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

From the perspective of the blogger, I would change my emphasis away from posting frequency, and focus more on high quality, in-depth articles; and implement a solid ‘promotional’ strategy to be sure that each article was being found and read (and shared and linked to) by your target audience.

    Brian Belfit

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

As many SEO bloggers know nothing changes overnight when it comes to Google Algorithms or SEO. Perhaps to us it seems like overnight but a lot of work and thought goes into SEO and how Google ranks a bloggers content in search results. Because so much work goes into SEO you can always guarantee the changes that come will not be devastating or dramatically different than the current or previous standards. Yes some changes will be large but you are always given great advice on how to get ready for these changes on the Google Blog. I also recommend Matt Cutt’s blog as something to subscribe too.

The strangest thing about SEO if you haven’t noticed yet is it does all the hard work for you. When you create your blog and start publishing content you don’t even have to do any SEO work, Google and other search engines will actually find your blog naturally. WordPress also makes it’ extremely easy to index our blogs for all search engines it’s fantastic! I don’t recommend trying to purchase links or write guest posts for linking purposes only. In my honest professional opinion SEO is meant to be a natural process so do what you’re doing already without SEO in mind.

Guest blog, submit to social media websites and continue marketing your blog the way you currently are. Submitting your blog posts to social media sites such as Blog Engage will naturally create backlinks and increase your blog’s authority. Similar; guest blogging and mentioning your site within relevant area’s of the guest post via a link (URL) will also create authority. This is what I’m talking about when I say be yourself and be natural. Overall I don’t think SEO will change much, but again who am I to tell I am simply a social media marketer.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Obviously being natural when generating backlinks to a blog is of most importance. With that said it’s important to have a diverse range of incoming links to our websites or blogs. Guest Blogging, Social Media, Bookmarking, Twitter, Facebook and more should be used to create a diverse portfolio of backlinks. Using these sites naturally creates the trail it’s up to you to engage and start working hard. Make sure to do things right when trying to increase your blogs authority within the search engines. Ensure you’re process is always natural and within the Google standards and guidelines. Things to stay away from are link exchanges, purchasing links directly such as blog rolls guest posts, website footer or site wide links. These types of links are not natural and are not recommend if you wish to increase your search engine (SE) traffic.

    Organic Google Analytics

I have never once worried about SEO. I’ve been told many times I should. I always reply with the same answer; Google is the most intelligent company in the world. Do you think something I can do will actually increase their performance or outcome ? Blog Engage has always been a do follow community with 142,553 outgoing links; yet we’ve always remained a PR4 with a ton of organic traffic as shown above in the image I’ve shared. So in closing my advice it to be natural and not to worry about SEO, with or without you, it’s doing what it needs too.

    Brian D. Hawkins

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

No one can deny that SEO looks entirely different than it did just a couple of years ago. I believe 2014 will see continuing disadvantages in excessive guest posting, blog commenting, and blog directories. I also think the social sharing trend will continue and become even more relevant in search positioning. Google’s personalized search and the SEO power of Google Plus will also continue to strengthen.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

If I could make just one recommendation for SEO in 2014, I’d recommend bloggers and site owners focus on solving problems for as many people as possible. Provide solutions for others and your content will be shared and linked to organically. There’s no secret pill, just build your community and put them above everything else.

    Brian Dean

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

I think SEO in 2014 will be more of the same. Lots of people in the SEO space hype up things like Google authorship and social signals. But we’ve seen little to no influence from those things so far and there’s no sign from
Google that they’ll be a major part of the algorithm in 2014 (or beyond).

So I’d recommend focusing on creating a great site and building great links in 2014.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

    Email outreach.

    David Leonhardt

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO is now and will continue to be in 2014 more about PR (public relations) than anything else. The on-site coding fundamentals will remain the same for the most part, still very important, but the old-fashioned link-building of the past will be much less important than ever before. In fact, link-building in 2014 might just be more about what links to avoid than how to get more.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Create something amazing and get the media fascinated by it. Pay for a survey and release the results in a press release, an Infographic, a slide show and a video, and hit the road with the information, taking it to every blogger and every publication you can find.

    Eric T Tung

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO has always fallen within the realm of big data. Uncountable data points are used to determine rankings, and these data points are only getting more numerous. I think in 2014, this will take on even more of a social component, and specifically through Google+. Social signals are already used in many places to help determine ranks, and with more cross-authentication between social networks, this will only continue to increase in the future.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

The biggest difference someone can make, professional or newbie is to blog. It shows search engines that your site is updated regularly, adds keywords to your site and gives social a place to source content. You can try to buy links, rewrite your web copy, but the biggest difference will be to blog consistently.

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO will be big in 2014. You will see brands finally getting the message on how important SEO is to their bottom line. Here’s what I foresee for 2014:

SEO’s everywhere will work more closely with the social media and content marketing teams. If they are working for a small company, they will need to be experts in all the 3 digital marketing spheres.

    • Social shares will continue to be more important and will catch up with link-building as an essential SEO tactic.
    • Google+ will grow even bigger in 2014
    • Authors will create more in-depth articles that will increase their author rank.
    • You will no longer be able to rely on keywords (especially single keywords) alone to rank well. You will need to use more focus terms plus related and contextual terms in your content.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

I would advise everyone, newbies and professionals to increase their author rank. I believe that this is one trend that is going to stay with us. Google is serious about showing the most relevant, accurate and useful results to the user. Your content will always show up at the top if you are considered an authority in your field. You can build up your author rank by:

    • writing in-depth articles
    • guest blogging for the top blogs in your niche
    • making sure you have Google authorship
    • Increasing your presence on Google+
    • Ensuring that you get plenty of feedback for every piece of content such as social shares and comments.

    Julie Joyce

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

I think we’ll see it evolve into something where actual user interaction, whether through social media channels or comments on posts, will be the deciding factor into who does better online. I know we all have been talking about relationship building and content creation this past year, but I do think they will be the driving factors for a site’s success. I imagine that poor quality tactics will continue to get squashed but from what the past tells me, they’ll still work for some sites and niches.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

I’m not sure if it’s really an SEO technique but I think doing social well is one of the most important ways that a site can do well online. If you aren’t ranking well for whatever reason (maybe your site is new or not well optimized yet) then getting a good social following and using it well can be a lifesaver.

    Kristi Hines

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO in 2014 for some businesses will be more about tearing down than building up, specifically in the link arena. As a webmaster, I have noticed a growth in link removal requests and a decline in link addition requests, and I believe that will continue to trend throughout the following year.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

I can’t just recommend one as these both go hand in hand, so quality content development and promotion. Combined, you will be able to gain likes and social mentions in a natural way that Google can’t complain about. Hopefully at least. 🙂

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO in 2014 is going to take big shift. As we have already seen that Google skipped too many months in PageRank update first time in its history. This simply means that something big is cooking in Google new algorithm. Back in the days people used to do article submission, too many spam comments, social bookmarking etc etc., but such things are no more working now.

Your website might see great growth in traffic for first 3-4 months but for long term these strategies are no more working.

As all SEO experts and experience bloggers are suggesting to write articles which actually solve people’s problems, so such articles are going to survive in next few years.

Here I would like to give you an example.

Let’s suppose I am searching on Google “How to grow taller fast?” and there are 5 sites in front of me (which I found via Google search) which are teaching tips to grow taller.
If I am opening one site and after reading the stuff I am not satisfied then I will move to another site.

If I am spending more time on second site as compared to first site then this simply means that content on second site is more valuable for me. In this case Google will came to know about the quality of first site’s stuff and in future its algorithm will keep in mind about the amount of time which previous visitor spent on first site. So chances are; Google is not going to give you good position again.

So writing quality as well as big articles is the only survival tips in 2014.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Don’t do any SEO if you want to survive for long term. 🙂

I am not saying to quit it completely but my point is; don’t try to over optimize your articles for SEO as Google knows what you are doing to get higher SERP.

In short – Write quality and big articles for getting better results.

    Matthew Woodward

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO is continually evolving and the past 12 months have seen some significant changes and trends that will continue into 2014.

Google have released a huge amount of updates in the past year, we have had-

    • 4 Panda updates
    • 2 Penguin updates
    • 2 unknown phantom updates
    • Pay day loan update
    • Knowledge graph update
    • Hummingbird

Google are actually getting good at detecting spam now!

On top of that we have had some major changes to the search engine results design meanign the #1 position doesn’t offer the same value as it did a year ago.

SEO is no longer all about the links. Moving forward SEO needs to converge content, social, analytics, user experience & marketing into a much broader strategy.

If you want to learn more about SEO in 2014 I have a much more detailed post on my blog, but is essence it’s time to evolve or die.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

There is only 1 SEO tactic that has stood the test of time and alogorithm updates. A tactic that I have been using for nearly a decade now with every single new site that I launch.

The tactic is so simple that many people overlook it in search for a more complex solution.

That tactic is replicating your competitors backlinks.

Sounds pretty boring, but with a bit of elbow grease and my free software it is easy to steal your competitors rankings!

A lot of people overlook this tactic, but it is the foundation of every single SEO campaign I have ever launched.

    Neil Patel

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO in 2014 is going to revolve more on content marketing and social media than ever before. Sites that provide great content will get more natural links, more social shares, and rank higher. This is the one strategy that isn’t as replaceable by your competition as it isn’t easy to write great content.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Content marketing. It’s a long term strategy… that seems to work for any type of business. http://www.quicksprout.com/the-advanced-guide-to-content-marketing/

    Neal Schaffer

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

Social media gives you a platform to create content to help you get found in search engines as well as gives search engines a way to rank your digital presence and influence of your content through analyzing social signals. Seeing that we’re all spending more time in social media and the amount of sheer data that is publically available can be analyzed for a variety of ranking objectives, it only makes sense that the relationship between social media and SEO will only deepen. That being said, the need to create original, high quality content that is relevant to your target audience is the single truth that unites both social media and SEO, and this truth is as relevant in 2013 as it will be in 2014.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Rather than focusing on frequency and adding to the noise that exists in social media, I’m becoming a bigger and bigger fan of the “Go Big or Go Home” approach. For every piece of content that you create and publish, try to make it matter by sharing only your best ideas and/or visuals. Make each blog post or social media update count. I think over time this will help you get more bang for your social media investment of time, and more importantly will help you focus on creating better content and give you more time for engagement versus feeling that you have to publish x times a day on y platform.

    Niall Devitt

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

Content marketing will be more important than ever with some emphasis moving to longer and more in-depth content. I suspect that the desirable length of text-based content has now shifted from around 500 words to 1000 words plus but mobile throws a set of additional challenges into this mix.

Creating content that will work well on multiple devices will become a big challenge in 2014. Social Media is already very important but I expect to see diversification on social media becoming more important in 2014 with marketers needing to maintain a presence on many platforms.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Guest blogging is one of the very best ways of building links, traffic and brands but many, who do it, do it carelessly. If you’re going to submit a guest post, do it carefully:

    • Select a sensible target website.
    • Write a post that really offers value to readers and demonstrates your expertise.
    • Don’t do it simply to get links or spam – any reputable website won’t publish your content if that’s your motivation.

    Renaud Gagne

I believe that the people who will have the best SEO in 2014 and beyond will
be the people who understand and learn more everyday about influence.

First come the audience. How do you build one?

Content is king as long as you can get people to consume it.

So getting people to consume your content without relying on google first is key.

When it comes down to building an audience I personally think that it is about
time for people in the social media space to learn and understand direct-response marketing.

    Step 1:
Create or give something of great value that will help your target market(no sales pitch)

    Step 2:
Create a Giveaway or a sweepstake promotion.

    Step 3:
Use the power editor and boost your campaign with well executed advertising.
(getting the right people in front of the right message at just the right time.)

One of my client was blown away how we were able, with less than $100, to create a list
of 5000 subscribers and add 3000 highly responsive fans in less than 5 days. (I use Antavo app)

The autoresponder automatically bring people to certain blogpost that allow us to build a bound and
segment them in different lists to find out where the real fans are.

More traffic, more social shares, more comments and more links.(Google likes it)

Everything start with people not Google.

    Steve Morgan

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

If Penguin’s taught us anything, it’s that you cannot over-optimise and you cannot unnaturally build links at all anymore – you shouldn’t have done anyway, but now there’s no excuse. Having worked on a number of unnatural link penalties this year, I’ve found that Google has a zero tolerance/forgiveness policy – in one example, I disavowed/removed c. 200 links and they still had a problem with the fact that I missed 2 or 3.

Therefore in 2014, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google cracks down even harder. I have a client that I’ve inherited from another SEO agency who already has a nasty amount of exact match anchor text, however he doesn’t (yet) have a penalty in Webmaster Tools. Even so, I’ve disavowed all the bad links. I think an SEO’s best bet would be to be proactive rather than reactive, and – of course – to never, ever, ever build a link that Google will have a problem with – not one.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

A very quick thing to look into when you take on a new project (especially if it’s someone who’s never done SEO before) is to ask what other domains they own and check that they’re redirecting properly. It’s something that’s very easy to forget/overlook, which is why I mention it. I took on a new client recently who owned 10 other domains (variations of the main name as .com, .co.uk, etc.) and half of them were 302 redirects while the other half weren’t redirecting at all. It took 5 minutes to change them all to 301 redirects and – bearing in mind that some of them had been linked to of their own accord – I’m sure that the main site would’ve benefitted from it. Additionally, beyond SEO, it also helps with UX (user experience), say if someone tried to access one of the other domains but didn’t get through to the main site.

    Tadeusz Szewczyk

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

SEO will be become more and more multi-faceted. There are already completely separate disciplines like local SEO for example. As organic SEO becomes more difficult.

I expect to see more optimization for social search (that is showing up for a certain group of people).

Just think of many niches where only a small number of people matter, like say a few thousand. These influencers and connectors search on Google while logged in as they are Web-savvy enough to use at least some Google services like YouTube, Gmail or Google Analytics. Now why would you want to optimize for the whole world, country or area when you want just to reach these people who matter?

SEO will also become more professional. The Google updates of recent years have weeded out many low quality SEO practicioners that for years have tainted the reputation of SEO as a whole. Also many of both successful and unsuccessful SEOs have rebranded as inbound marketers, content marketers or lumberjacks. I have considered rebranding myself as a dog walker too but I realized that after 10 years in the SEO business I’m really fond of all that jazz. So we lost many marketers for the brand of SEO. Now the remaining people can reform what SEO means. That’s actually a good thing.

I never really wanted to do marketing, advertising or clear forests so I stay with optimization.

Of course content has always been at the center of my efforts and they were inbound, I wasn’t really pushing people to link to me so that I don’t need to change my job description. I try to educate myself on things like responsive design, user experience, conversion optimization so I can help not only with blogs, social media and search. More people will embrace adjacent disciplines in my opinion. Those who have rebranded are gone so there’s less competition now. Being an SEO who also masters UX and CRO can be a competitive advantage now. Many clients do not seek generalist marketers but specialists with a few areas of expertise, not dozens of things they master a little.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

Relationship building has been hyped to death last year but it still matters more than ever. You don’t build 100 relationships like you build 100 links but you can get thousands of links once you build those 100 relationships. Making sure that people in your industry know who you are is crucial.

People rarely link to sites or share their content when they don’t know them.

You need relationships with people who trust you to get traction on the Web. So look out after your peers and band together. Do not just focus on influencer ass kissing as I like to call it. The few high profile a-list bloggers can’t help everybody. They barely manage to cope with their own tasks.

    1. How will SEO evolve in 2014?

For agencies: I’d like to see firms really helping their clients transfer offline subject-matter-expertise and product / service concepts online, using well-researched, engaging content that answers target customer questions, resolves sales-cycle challenges and objections and proves their online industry authority.

For businesses: Business owners becoming educated on internet marketing and taking their online brands and web assets more seriously is a must. If hiring help externally, work with those who really know what they’re doing, especially content planning, link acquisition and outreach. For those using in-house expertise, make sure they understand semantic search, entities and have a fundamental understanding of marketing (over and above coding) – your future online success depends on it!

From a search engine perspective, Google will continue their relentless pursuit of webspam with brands heavily penalised and rogue link networks de-indexed. I also expect to see updated algorithm’s that do a far better job of tracking and rewarding online interaction (site behaviour), social sharing and local online sentiment (reviews and ratings).

    2. Recommended SEO technique

    Newbies:

More a process than a technique, I’d recommend planning ideal website visitor outcomes and journey experiences (site navigation, conversion strategies and content architecture) well before designing (or re-designing) a website.

The book ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ says it best: ‘start with the end in mind..’ Once the ‘journey and outcome’ has been clearly defined, landing pages can be optimised for conversions and visibility.

    SEO Pro’s:

SEO has changed dramatically over the last few years. Google’s Knowledge Graph and semantic search transition from ‘keyword strings to people, places and things’ has resulted in an almighty shift in how professional SEO’s must now think, process information and work with clients.

So, my biggest recommendation for SEO’s finding this shift challenging would be to read, re-read, learn and understand from the following posts, written by SEO’s who’ve made the big step up:

My strategy for SEO in 2014 is this: I’m not going to actively build links, I’m not going to comment on someone’s blog with the link in mind, I’m going to create relationships because when an army of people are sharing your content, that’s better than months of building links.

    2. Recommended SEO technique

In 2014, I’m going to write some of the best stuff I’ve ever written and it’s not going to have a single keyword in it (not on purpose anyway). Stop chasing something that is going to change. Control your blog with helpful content.

    Wow, that’s long isn’t it?

I hope you enjoyed this experts share on SEO tips 2014 as much as I do. I believe there are abundance tips on SEO here itself and I highly recommend you to check on their websites for even more information.

Again, a huge thank you for all the contributors and even supporters for this project. I have learned a lot on both collecting data and as well as learning more on SEO itself!

  • Boost Organic Search Engine Optimization Using HitTail

Boost Organic Search Engine Optimization Using HitTail

Nowadays, ranking for certain keywords on search engine is much tougher than previously. Years back, I could easily rank a two-words keyword within weeks but nowadays, it seems like forever.

Search engine optimization had not changed but it had just got harder.

I am a huge fan of organic search engine optimization techniques and recently, I came across a tool which is said to be (and possibly) one of the best keyword research tool out there.

Being an avid user of Long Tail Pro, I was really skeptical on the idea of using this tool but I thought, I would give it a go either way.

The below are my experience and of course, tell me what you think using the comment form below.

    Improving search results using HitTail

HitTail does only one job (literally speaking) and that is providing you long tail keywords to further increase your blog traffic.

    HitTail keyword suggestions
HitTail will provide long tail keyword suggestions to help you rank better

You can easily practise organic search engine optimization techniques in just 3 steps using HitTail. Yes, only 3 simple steps and you are probably having a good chance to rank better on SERPs.

    1. Integrating HitTail code into WordPress blogs

Probably the easiest part of all. Upon registering (get your trial HitTail account here) for an account, a code will automatically be created for you.

The code looks something like this:

    <!– HitTail Code –>
    <script type=”text/javascript”>
    (function(){ var ht = document.createElement(‘script’);ht.async = true;
    ht.type=’text/javascript’;ht.src = ‘//123456.hittail.com/mlt.js’;
    var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ht, s);})();
    </script>

Copy the code and place it before the closing of </body> tag or wp_footer(). For those who are not using Genesis theme, you would probably need to find the related tag to place the code which wouldn’t take you much time.

Have a look what Geensis theme has to offer: Check out Genesis Framework & child themes.

Once that is done, you would need to wait for around 30 minutes or so (remember to clear cache for faster response) before HitTail would be able to detect the code and installation is complete.

    2. Allowing HitTail to crawl and providing results

After your tracking code is verified, you will not be getting an immediate response or results you are looking for. It is best to wait for a few days before coming back to check on the results.

Basically, HitTail will record the source of your traffic and it will focus only on search engine traffic. As I had said above, HitTail helps to boost organic search engine optimization and it uses organic search results to provide you with the most relevant data.

HitTail provides several result options which are:

    • Search hits
    • Keywords
    • My HitTail
    • Suggestions

Search hits – This is where it gives you an exact information for the source of your traffic

Keywords – Keywords that visitors were searching which lands them on your site

My HitTail – Give you an outlook of the top 10 keywords of your search traffic and the number of long tail keywords that contributes to your traffic

Suggestions – HitTail takes a the list of long tail keywords (refer above) and provide you suggestions on future blog posts topics.

    3. Searching for the best keywords for blogging

HitTail helps to promote organic search engine optimization
This is what it looks like on HitTail’s dashboard

With the above, HitTail basically does all the keyword research you ever need to do and give you (in return) a pot of gold. Now, the last step is to choose the right keywords from the Suggestions tab and start blogging!

Let’s assume that you are doing a niche blog and you are looking for a great writer to do it for you. Well, HitTail team thought of that too!

You can use the ‘Order an Article” button on HitTail and get a complete article for the price of $19. And if you think that it is some sort of low quality blog post, you are absolutely wrong.

These are written by professional and you are guaranteed a high quality post that is according to your requirements.

    So, is HitTail worth it?

For me, HitTail is really an excellent tool for bloggers. If you are looking to invest time and effort into organic search engine optimization techniques, HitTail got to be in your goto keyword tools.

HitTail cost from $19.95 per month and it comes with a 21 days free trial. Register for HitTail for free!

  • 4 SEO Methods I Used To Achieve PageRank 2 After 5 Months And 24 Days

4 SEO Methods I Used To Achieve PageRank 2 After 5 Months And 24 Days

Google PageRank update took place on December 6, 2013 and probably, the last PR update for the year. Now, if you have yet to check on your PageRank, you can check your ranking here.

Today, this blog is 5 months and 24 days old. After the Google PageRank update, I received a nice Google’s pat on the back by getting Google PageRank 2.

    Thank you Google for that!

It is indeed a long road with all the Google surprises we had encountered during this year especially with Google Hummingbird and Penguin 2.1.

Finally, I truly understand the meaning of “hard work paid off”.

Now, let’s take a look at how my blog did in the past 5 months as of today:

    • PageRank 2
    • Domain Authority – 45/100
    • Page Authority – 52/100
    • Root domain links – 357
    • Total links – 7,950

    Google PageRank Update

The secret recipe to get high PageRank

There are probably thousands of ways to achieve high PageRank and over the course of 5 months, I really tried to think out of the box. I wanted to be different and I ended up creating my SEO blueprint.

For those who had no idea what SEO blueprint is all about, allow me to explain to you in simple words. I created my own SEO strategies and start working out from phrase to phrase. Here are several techniques I did according to orders:

    1. Build at least 50 quality blog posts on my site
    2. Practice internal linking among all related articles
    3. Building reputation and engage in the influence market
    4. Guest postings on high PR blogs and related niche

If you think I did all that in just under 2 months, you are wrong. I did that for months (every single day). I do skip some days from time to time … hey, I am also human right?

    1. Building the right blog content and not applying with guest posting (yet)

For me, content is everything and when I mean everything, it means A to Z.

My ‘A to Z’ means that publishing the right blog content with has high value and quality. Don’t even think of creating evergreen blog posts as I don’t believe in that. What works yesterday might not be useful in tomorrow’s world.

The keyword here are focus, focus and focus. Focus in building a blog full of resources and not only that, focus in building a blog which is outstanding. Why would you want to build a blog which offers the same information with probably a dozen blogs out there?

If you have less than 50 quality posts on your blog, you can (literally) forget about guesting posting. I know hundreds or thousands of bloggers out there who are looking for guest posting but have they ever thought what would happen if they don’t have any quality blog post to share?

For example, you may be able to publish a post on some PR 5 blog but what do you want to backlink to? Linking back to your above average blog post? Hell no!

You want to link back to your crazy and epic blog post, you know … creating the wow factor and start building more readership.

I took the road less taken and decided to focus on quality content over guest posting for starters. Building quality content isn’t easy and I found out that most readers dislike reading articles over 1,000 words.

Wait a minute! My blog posts are usually over 1,500 words and how?

The solution is simple. Creating hype and work from there. Feeling mushy and lost? Here’s an example:

Title: Opps! I Accidentally Increased Google+ Traffic By Over 700% ‘¦ But How?

Content: Make the introduction short and straight to the point. Then, provide images and stats to proof your point.

When I shared this on one of Google+ community, it became (almost) the hottest topic of the day. Readers are responding, sharing and discussing over it. Now, that’s what I call epic blog post.

Out of 100 readers, 50 would probably click on it due to the title itself while 30% will still click on it while believing it is just a scam. This is where quality content and images (stats) close to the introduction paragraph will ‘bribe’ them to continue reading.

Of course, you will have around 20% who wouldn’t even given a damn and not even bother clicking it but guess what? It doesn’t matter because you already have 80% of the reach!

Here are some of my favorite posts that you can dig in:

    2. Practising proper SEO with internal and external link building techniques

Link building techniques affect Google PageRank
Backlinking is like building a bridge and connect two different areas at the same time

If you are focusing on external link building only, you are definitely missing something really big. You need to focus on internal backlink as well if you want to have a higher PageRank.

Matt Cutts said sharing backlink ranking from one article to another is possible as long as it is legit. So, what I did were on my own blog:

    • Find the top 5 blog articles that gain the most organic traffic
    • Place 2 to 3 related backlinks (each) on the top 5 posts
    • Repeat the process on lower traffic blog posts

With the above, I am able to share my ranking score from highest traffic blog to moderate and low traffic blog posts.

The truth is, I had over 80 blog posts and there is no way I could cover them all. Therefore, choose the right blog posts to ensure that you are making both search engines and visitors happy.

For those who are asking, I focus more on internal link building prior to external link building. This is to ensure that my blog is always prepared in case if I ever get a backlink or trackback from a higher PageRank site.

Here’s a full list of SEO strategies and resources for your reference.

    3. Getting involved in the influence market and the effects on blog ranking

I am a huge fan of social media and from the first day of blogging here, I am always focusing on referral traffic.

Before we proceed, do you think that influence market can affects your PageRank?

I didn’t want to be just like the other 164 million blogs out there. I wanted to build my brand … the ‘Reginald Chan’ brand name. So, I started to spend time on several, high profile sites to build my brand name on a daily basis.

Through my experience, building authority and influence could easily be achieved with social media. All you ever need are timing and the right planning. Before you even decide to go into influence marketing, ensure that you know everything about that niche or else, you are going to destroy your reputation.

The biggest misconception about influence marketing is that it is a short term ‘investment’. Building an authority takes time and patience. Personally, I have been doing blog marketing since day one until now. Not even a day rest!

To help you get start with influence marketing, here is one article I recommend you to read; 5 Steps To Become An Influencer In Your Own Niche Like Brian Clark.

    4. Guest posting and its effects on Google PageRank

    Advantages of guest blogging
Proper guest blogging will help boost backlink and increase PageRank

For me, guest posting is a privilege and forever it will be. So, only invest time and effort into guest posting when you have complete the first 3 steps above.

We all know that guest posting is a great way to build backlinks but the biggest question is … how do you do guest posting correctly?

Guest posting works in two ways; Building authority and backlinks. However, that wouldn’t be possible if you do not have quality content to share right? This is where the ‘quality content’ part as said above is very important.

Here’s an example. I noticed many guest bloggers who applied on my site are either submitting spinned articles or low quality ones. For Christ’s sake, please avoid doing so. Instead, submit an article which you had spend hours constructing and are high in quality.

If you are spending 1 hour in writing a blog post for your own site, take 3 hours or more to do a guest post. Guest post must always be more than just good. It has to be epic and it has to be really, really that good.

The truth is that submitting 100 guest posts will not guarantee you a better Google PageRank. Instead, focus in submitting quality guest posts to ensure that each one of them counts.

Bloggers, don’t make the same mistake over and over again. Stop submitting countless guest posts just to build backlinks. Instead, provide quality articles and you would definitely get more than what you ‘asked’ for ~ Self quote.

When it comes to guest posting, this is my guest posting checklist to ensure high chance of approval and building reputation.

What do I think about Google PageRank update?

For me, Google PageRank is a great way to measure how much work you had done to your blog and when I say “work”, I mean real work such as guest posting, quality contents and a dozen more SEO techniques. While it is just a way to determine how your site rank in the eyes of Google and search engines, I got to admit that it certainly felt good to see a boost in PR. It shows that hard work paid off.

In a nutshell, Google PageRank is determined by various factors such as the number of backlinks, SEO enrichments and a dozen more factors. It is not advisable to over focus in getting higher PageRank as it will easily cloud your jjudgment

  • The Real Deal About On Page And Off Page SEO For Optimization

The Real Deal About On Page And Off Page SEO For Optimization

You have plans to dominate the search engine page results and so do the rest of the 160 million blogs out there as we speak. With the ever changing SEO industry, the least you could do is by optimizing your website. Yes, this means that optimizing not only your root domain but every post and pages you have on your site.

With all these Google update changes being rolled out, there are something in SEO just doesn’t change such as the basic, on-page and off-page SEO. If you have no idea what SEO is all about, this article could be a very good refresher training for you, Learning basic SEO in 521 seconds.

So, what is on page SEO and off page SEO? Allow me to explain in this short podcast below:

How to optimize website with on page and off page SEO?

    Optimize website using SEO keywords
Dominate search engines and competitors using the right keywords

What are the on page SEO checklists?

On-page SEO means techniques that you could use to optimize your website; something you can physically and virtually control. Though some of these methods are very tedious, they play a huge role when it comes to determine your site’s ranking.

    1. Choosing the right keyword

Choosing the right keyword is important for every blog post. For instance, choosing a high competition keyword could easily means 6 months of struggle to hit page 1 on Google while choosing a low competition keyword could generate very low traffic for you which is not good for ROI.

Keyword research is all about searching for untouched and untapped long tail keywords. For example, while the keyword ‘˜blogging’ could generate several millions search queries and having a high competition, you could use the term ‘˜best blogging tricks’ as a long tail keyword.

This keyword doesn’t only have a lower competition count but it also has a higher chance of getting a better targeted audience.

If you are interested to try on a free tool for keyword research, you should read this, Turning Google Keyword Planner into a premium keyword research tool.

Alternatively, you can use the famous Long Tail Pro for accurate and quick keyword research.

Find out why so many marketers are using Long Tail Pro for keyword research.

    2. Keyword density

    Keyword density in website optimization
Do you practise using keyword density on your blog posts?

Do you or do you not use keyword density? I know for the fact that popular SEO tools like SEOPressor recommends focusing on keyword density.

I could totally see the logic behind this as it is all about making your blog readable and not over-optimized.

According to Search Engine Journal, keyword density of 8% is excellent and doesn’t seem spammy, if you have a 500 word article, then 40 of those words should have variances of the search term you are targeting, if this seems excessive, lower the keyword density down to 5% and you will only need to add 25 variances/instances of your keyword.

Personally, I try to make sure that my focus keyword isn’t exceeding the 4% mark and the balance for my secondary keywords (if any). Having too high density of keywords could easily make your blog post unreadable and is definitely not a good move to ‘court’ your visitors.

    3. Using the proper alt tags for images

I know a handful of bloggers who doesn’t practise this and trust me ‘¦ you need this if you ‘˜talk SEO’. Alt tags for images are important to ensure that search engine crawlers (particularly Google) understand what those images are all about.

Optimizing alt tags for images is relatively easy as you need to focus on several factors such as:

    • Avoid using the same keywords for the Title and Alt Tags
    • Alt tags must be short and catchy (most importantly precise

Here’s a great article written by Ann Smart in regards to the topic; Image Alt Tags vs Image Title.

    4. Heading tags

Have you ever used the H2 to H4 heading tags on your blog? If you have not used it, then you should do!

Basically H1 are meant to for your website logo and your blog title while H2 to H4 should be used to classify the sub categories.

If you are wondering how many heading tags you should be using per blog post, no one really knows the answer. Basically, avoid over using it and it should work just fine.

Alt tags are great especially when it comes to highlighting an important topic or category. Using it wisely and you will be able to attract your readers to read more while overusing it will easily kill the attention.

    5. Building internal and external links

Link building is basic SEO 101 and this is important. While it is always good to have more links pointing back to your domain, you still need to focus a lot on building internal backlinks.

For example, Matt Cutts talked about how PageRank score is transferred properly with proper pyramid style. Watch the video below:

Now tell me, does this make any sense to you?

The biggest mistake done by bloggers is not sharing their internal links. Sharing proper links between posts will ensure that PageRank and Page Authority ranking will be shared and distributed among the rest of the posts.

Don’t have time to redo all the backlinks or perform internal backlinks? Click here to find out how to put internal backlink on autopilot.

There is no fast way when it comes to build external backlinks in white hat SEO. It takes time and lots of effort to build it. After Google Hummingbird and Penguin 2.1, it is clear that Google focuses on quality backlinks over quantity.

Here are some methods you can build quality backlinks:

    • Guest posting
    • Commenting
    • Trackbacks

    6. Crawlers and bots accessible

This is probably a no brainer but it is important when it comes to website indexing. You need to ensure that your website is accessible by crawlers and bots and this can be done easily.

Firstly, you need to check if your site has a robots text and type ‘˜yourdomainname.com/robots.txt’ without the symbols. If the page loads, it means that you have a robots text file in your database. If you do not have one, fire up your Notepad and save an empty .txt file as ‘robots.txt’. Upload the file and you would have a robots.txt now.

You have two options here when it comes to the content of the file. It can be empty or with specific permission. With specific permission, you could ‘˜tell’ the bots to crawl your post but not your admin page.

In order to do, copy and paste the code into the robots.txt and save it.

    7. Meta data, markups and schema helps ranking your site better

You probably have 100 high quality articles on your site with proper backlinks but you are getting less than 100 organic traffic.

Help! What did I do wrong and why Google hates me?

Search engine crawlers are not human and thus, (at times) they could not understand our blog posts. In order to solve the issue, this is where meta data, markups and schema which come into play. For a naked eye, there could be no difference but in the eyes of crawlers, those markups are all the difference!

The below are some examples of markup data which can be tested with the Google Rich Snippet Tool.

What does Rich Snippet Tool looks like?
When was the last time you test your website for markup and microdata?

To further understand these terms, here are some resources you could refer to:

So, what if you hate codings but still want these godly markups? You can try check out WP Social SEO Booster Pro which allows you to enable all these features in less than 10 minutes flat (I did that in just under 5 minutes).

For those who are using Genesis Framework, microdata markups and HTML 5 are done automatically in the theme.

What is off page optimization means to you?

If on-page SEO is SEO techniques we can control, off-page SEO is the total opposite. While off-page SEO is usually indirect traffic booster, there are still methods that we can practice in order to further optimize website.

    1. Contribution of social media SEO

Some call social media as the next big thing in SEO. The concept of social media SEO is when an article get published and shared around, it increases the article value.

In terms of search engine optimization, this type of article should rank better than the rest due to popularity.

The trick to gain more social signal is simple and in most cases, building a shareable article. While there are no proven theory on how an article go viral, the chances are always better for an article which has a high share-ability value.

If you have yet to start using social media, you can use this guide to give you a kick start; 3 steps to build social media automation.

    2. Become an influencer yourself

Influence plays a huge role in off-page SEO.

Let’s take an example of Ana Hoffman’s popular post, 202 Bite-Sized Tips To Insanely Increase Your Blog Traffic. It was shared over 400 times on Twitter, 200 times on Facebook and 80 times on Google+.

So, what was the recipe behind this virality?

I would call this influence. Now, Ana is a guru when it comes to traffic generation and she is already a household name for many including me. When she blogs, she really blogs. I mean … she REALLY do that extremely well. Every post is well researched, linked out properly and accompanied with case studies which I really dig into it.

When you mix all those quality, you are one step closer into becoming an influencer in your own niche. This means that when you talk, people are listening and this makes all the difference.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of influence as with the proper influence market, you can build a strong social media presence and indirectly, increasing your website ranking.

The moral of the story is simple; If you want to be an influencer, make sure that you know what you are talking! Get the facts right and start gaining your visitor’s trust.

    3. Unique content above everything else

Nearly everyone in this blogging industry talks about quality content and its advantages. However, they are missing out something important which is … uniqueness.

Unique content usually stands out of the crowd because it is ‘¦ yes, unique.

The term ‘˜unique’ is very vast and therefore, it can as simple as providing epic content, catchy titles, case studies and even mesmerizing results.

    Here are some examples:

    • How to increase Google+ traffic?
    • Generate Google+ traffic with 3 simple steps
    • 5 steps to explode your Google+ traffic
    • How I increased Google+ traffic over 700%?

When it comes to unique titles, the first and second are totally out of the game as the title is not catchy enough. Now, the third one is pretty good as the word ‘˜exploding’ added quite a punch to it.

The last one is the clear winner. Imagine reading the title and are you convinced to click on it? Trust me that 80% will feel it is some sort of ‘˜scam’ and 20% might actually believe it straight out of the box. Out of these, I would say majority of them (both sides) will definitely be clicking the title to the read it; On one side, they are hoping to see how far the article goes while the other side want to know how it was really done.

I got to admit that the 700% was pretty a killer. It doesn’t make much sense but the data speaks up to it. Either way, I have basically created (what I call) ‘¦ mini virality.

Check on the link below to see what I am talking about.

Bookmark this if you want to know how I increased by Google Plus traffic over 700% in just 5 days!

Now tell me, do you agree or disagree?

    4. Are you mobile optimized?

Responsive design is already a part of off-page SEO one way or another. If you are not using it, you got to use it ‘¦ immediately!

Still not convinced? Here are some serious stats for you to digest:

According to Woman In Business (About.com), there are over 250 million users logging into Facebook through their mobile devices. Source.

60% of US smartphone shoppers purchase products or services at least monthly. In fact, a majority of smartphone shoppers across the 6 countries studied (US, UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Japan) purchase on their device at least monthly. Source.

It is no denial that responsive design or mobile optimized is needed when it comes to off-page SEO. Google likes it and your visitors would love it. Imagine searching for a specific information on a mobile responsive website is much easier (especially when it comes to navigation) compared to a non mobile optimized website.

In today’s world, by not having a mobile responsive design could easily mean lots of disadvantages. Most readers are not patient enough to zoom in and out when it comes to reading an article. So, make it easy for them to navigate through your site and show them what you got to offer.

If you are looking for great themes, look no further as these are my recommended WordPress themes.

The real deal about optimizing website

Focusing solely on on page SEO will not make the cut in today’s world. If you want to start ranking on search engine result pages, you need to start optimizing your website with both on page and off page SEO.

As easy as both of them sound, it does take a lot of time and effort to get them done. The trick here is to have a balance of both the SEO strategies.
