How to start freelance writing?

If this is your concern, you are at the right place. In this article, I will share with you some quick and efficient ways to start freelance writing in just 3 hours.

But before that, freelancing makes my day ... every day.

I love freelancing and I have been doing for years. As a matter of fact, this is what happens to me when I talk about freelance writing.

how to start freelance writing

Wait, who am I?

My name is Reginald and I've been a freelance writer since 2004. It all started as a hobby and soon, it turned out to be a full-fledge business.

Freelance writing is also my base which helped me launched my creative agency.

During my freelance writing career, I was lucky to be featured on many authority websites and recently, by Freelancer.com as one of the top freelancers in Malaysia. You can read the article here.

Question: How much can you make through freelance writing?

I believe there is many concepts and ideas pertaining to this topic. Here's what I can tell you.

You can make at least $10 per article (approximately 350 to 500 words) and on average, a moderate freelance writer can earn around $20 to $25 per article.

You can earn even more when you are doing ghost writing for eBooks and website contents/redesign — that's an easy $200+ per project.

The total amount you can earn often comes hand in hand with your experience. For example:

  • What is your writing experience?
  • What are the perks you are offering?
  • How fast can you complete an article?

If you are serious in starting a freelance writing career, you can easily earn at least $500 or $1,000 a month by just writing!

In most cases, this is often more than what you earn from blogging or through Google Adsense.

1. How to start freelance writing?

The first step is often the easiest of all — take some time to determine the type of content you want to write.

For example, you should have some sort of writing experience now (be it blogging or any other forms of writing).

Defining the niche of your writing allows you to create a better portfolio to attract the right and potential employers (more on this below).

For me, I am very into business writing. Therefore, all my freelance writing projects are aimed heavily on small-medium sized businesses who require professional ghostwriting services.

Note: You should take your time to understand the capacity of writing as well as your target audience before moving to the next step.

2. Choosing a freelance writing platform

There are many freelance writing platforms and for me, my go-to platform is Freelancer.com.

The advantage of using Freelancer.com is the free account creation. You can easily try out the platform for free (30-days trial) which is extremely important especially when you are new to the freelancing writing industry. You can register a free account here.

Once you get several projects in, consider going for a paid account for better visibility and faster withdrawal rate.

3. Creating a professional profile

If you want to attract potential employers, having a professional profile is critical for success.

What should be included in a professional freelancer profile?

A professional freelancer profile should include information such as your past experience, a little about you and of course, what makes you different from the rest of the freelance writers.

Your profile should be short but precise. Here's an example.

About

Reginald Chan

A TEDx speaker and Chief Marketing Officer, Reginald is highly passionate in writing. His writings had been published on authority sites such as Harvard University, Yahoo! Small Business, Entrepreneur Magazine and SEMrush.

You can also see my Freelancer profile here.

If you have a blog, you can even create a single page profile page to sell your services. Single page landing pages can be created easily using WordPress website builders. I use Thrive Architect and head over to this post to learn how you can easily create a landing page under 15 minutes.

4. Bidding professionally

Want to know how to become a freelance writer?

You need to have a highly effective template when it comes to bidding for a project.

I know. There are guru's and coaches out there that tell you not to do so. But hear me out.

Having a template allows you to bid faster and sending the relevant information to your potential employers.

What should be included in the template?

  • check
A quick introduction of you (people like to know who they are dealing with)
  • check
An overview of what you do (sharing experiences for example)
  • check
How you fit into the project?
  • check
What makes you different from the rest of the freelance writer?
  • check
What are your commitments and promise?
  • check
    The expected completion time
  • check
    Pitch for future works

Having the right pitch at the end of your bid is critical because you want to showcase your interest for long term work and not just one off projects (like what most freelancers are looking for).

5. Communication is key

If you want to be a highly sought after freelance writer, you need to be really good with your communication.

This means that be courteous during the conversion and ensure that you respond with an acceptable time frame. For example, I love responding within 10 minutes and if it is in a different timezone, within the day will create a lasting impression.

The key to successful freelance writing business is creating a clear path for communication before, during and after completing the project.

6. Ask for more future jobs

Lastly, do not be afraid to ask for more future jobs. If you have done a great writing job, then the employers will have no problem giving you more jobs in the near future.

find freelance writing jobs

The trick here is to make it clear that you are always looking for long term business partnership and have no problem working with him/her again.

Are you ready to start freelance writing?

I love doing freelance writing as it is not only fun but extremely rewarding.

We are always trying to make our WordPress site loads faster because it is a known fact that slow loading website will make you lose web traffic and potential customers.

Do you know that visitors spend an average of 3 seconds on a site to allow it to load? So, if your website is not loading faster, you are losing visitors!

make wordpress faster

What is the easiest way to make WordPress faster?

Glad you ask this and in this post, you will discover 8 steps you can take today (yes, like right now) to make WordPress faster.

But before that, make no mistake as the blame should not on WordPress. Installing a stock WordPress theme such as Twenty Seventeen and zero plugin will allow your site to load under 1 second even with the below average web hosting service.

When you start installing premium themes and plugins to make your WordPress experience better, your loading speed will take the hit almost instantly — from an average of 1 second to over 5 seconds!

So, what can you do to make your WordPress faster? Here are some of the best tips you can start today and without hiring a website developer.

1. Choose a well-coded WordPress theme

A good WordPress theme goes a long way and in this case, the theme is going to impact the speed of your site.

Great WordPress themes doesn't take forever to load and as a matter of fact, it takes only a faction of the time to load.

I use StudioPress for this WordPress site (and almost all my other sites) because it is fast, well-coded and doesn't come with bloatware.

2. Choosing the right web hosting company

There is no wrong going for a cheaper web hosting solution if you are not affordable for premium WordPress hosting such as WPEngine.

There are many web hosting solutions that starts between $2 to $5 per month for hosting a small website. The most important parts about choosing the right web hosting company are:

  • check
    High online status
  • check
Availability of support (chat, email or phone)
  • check
    Reviews
  • check
    Different database to choose from

You can go through a full list of the best cheap WordPress hosting services (click to read the complete comparison).

If you are looking for a good WordPress hosting, I highly recommend Cloudways for affordability and scalability. I even use Cloudways to host this blog.

3. Install only useful plugins

How many plugins do you have under the hood? On average, most of us have around 10 to 12 WordPress plugins installed and active.

While there is no perfect number for the number of plugins installed, the best solution is always to install the minimum number of plugins.

The more plugin you have installed, the slower your WordPress website will load.

If you want to know which plugin is dragging your WordPress speed to snail-mode, install P3 Profiler and run a test.

Want to know which plugin is dragging your site down? Run a test using P3 Profiler plugin to determine the culprit!

4. Uninstall plugins that you don't use

Are you keeping inactive plugins and not uninstalling them? You should always make it a point to uninstall plugins that you don't use.

Leaving inactive plugins in your WordPress site will not only slow down your site but it will also affect your site's security.

5. Be wary on theme builders

There is high demand for theme builders in today's market because it is easy to use and creating website from scratch is way much easier.

However, using theme builders can easily cause your website to load slower than usual.

Most theme builders come with multiple elements and customization to help you design the perfect website layout

The only problem is that it comes with a truckload of CSS and codes which will slow down your website loading speed.

Looking for the best WordPress theme builder? I highly recommend Divi 3.0 for performance, speed and affordability.

6. Install cache plugin

Cache plugins help to speed up your website in many ways. While premium WordPress hostings often come with inbuilt cache feature, you probably need to install your own cache plugin if you are using a lower end WordPress hosting service.

The easiest cache plugin to configure is WP Super Cache and you can pretty much set it up (automatic) in just a few clicks.

Of course, W3 Total Cache is a great alternative but it certainly comes with several advanced configuration.

Click here to setup your W3 Total Cache correctly for faster loading speed.

7. Remove unwanted CSS

Removing unwanted CSS is a great way to speed up your overall WordPress site.

The process of removing unwanted CSS isn't a walk in the park. It certainly takes some coding skills and knowledge. You can read this post to learn more about it.

If you are using Thrive Architect (or Thrive Content Builder), you are in luck!

There is an option for you to remove unwanted CSS files when you are building WordPress landing pages with Thrive Architect.

remove css to speed up WordPress

The removal of Theme CSS allows your website to load lesser CSS files and thus, improving the overall loading speed.

If you know a thing or two about CSS and coding, it is always best to remove unwanted CSS codes from your site to avoid slow loading speed.

BONUS

Are you looking for a good theme builder? Thrive Architect is one of my top favorite after Divi 3.0. Read my full Thrive Architect review and see how it can help you create powerful landing pages in just a few clicks (without making your site loads slower)!

8. Use a content delivery network (CDN)

If you want to make your website loads faster, then start using a content delivery network (CDN).

A CDN speed up your website by keeping static files in various datacentres around the world. This allows faster distribution of files to your visitors as they will be getting partial files from the datacentres nearest to their locations.

CloudFlare and Incapsula are two of the best free content delivery network that will help fasten the speed of your website and provide a layer of additional security.

Want to make your website speed even faster? Try using customized CloudFlare Page Rules for massive loading speed. Click here to read more the full guide.

Using Thrive Architect, your site will never break in the case where you decide to uninstall it (regardless whatever the reason is).

So, you know that your content is always safe!

Thrive website builder is definitely worth every penny spend.

Getting the best podcast recording software is important because it allows you to:

  • Record audio without issue
  • Perform advanced setting to make your audio clearer and sharper

Best podcast software for Windows

I'm a Windows user (for ages now) and Windows users are pretty darn lucky.

There is the all-time-popular Audacity which is free to use and Adobe Audition which is a paid version.

1. Audacity

Here's what you need to know about Audacity — it is a free cross-platform audio editor.

Audacity is a very popular podcast equipment for podcasters and it is comes packing with some features (even when you can download it for free).

The only downside about Audacity is that it lacks the intuitive user interface and it can be very confusing when you are first getting started. Once you get the hang of it, I'm sure you are going to love it!

2. Adobe Audition

If you are looking for the best podcast equipment, Adobe Audition must be in your list of tool!

This software is designed for podcast production and editing, and comes with many advanced tools just for that matter. There are a number features including noise-reduction capabilities, advanced compression and EQ.

Want to perform batch processing and saving time? You can do so with Adobe Audition! In just a few clicks, you can apply various effects to one file, save it, then apply those same effects to a “batch” of other files.

Best podcast software for Mac

There are several podcast equipment you can install on your Mac for podcasting. The top two podcast software for Mac are GarageBand and Logic Pro.

GarageBand is a free digital audio workstation (also known as DAW) and it is a great podcast software for podcasters, regardless you are a beginner or advanced podcaster.

Using GarageBand, you can create separate tracks for music, intros and outros, ad spots, and many other features. You can also easily fade them in and out as needed, move them around and adjust levels in just a few clicks.

If you are a Mac user, GarageBand is definitely a no-brainer for your podcasting business.

2. Logic Pro X

Logic Pro X is a pretty interesting podcasting software for Mac. In short, Logic Pro X is a full-featured music production and audio editing program.

Logic Pro X does a lot of features similar to GarageBand and the biggest advantage of this software is the Remote App which you can use on iPhone or iPad.

The only downside using Logic Pro X is that it comes with a one-time purchase fee of $200.

The best headphone for podcasting

Question: Why should you use a mixer for podcasting?

Answer: Using a mixer will improve your audio quality. The pre-amps will be nicer and will really help your microphone shine. Podcasters buy mixers for the advanced features/options and the control that they offer, as well as the efficiency they can bring to your recording workflow.

So, which is the best mixer for podcasting?

1. Yamaha MG10 10-Input Stereo Mixer

How do you host your own podcast? I'm glad you asked!

Starting a podcast business is fairly easy and the challenging part is where you need to work extremely hard to market and get listeners to your show.

In this article, you will find the exact steps to host your own podcast and market your podcast business to success.

host your own podcast

Before that, let's talk a little about podcasting. Here's a statement issued by Variety back on February 2018:

Apple Podcasts … features more than 500,000 active podcasts, including content in more than 100 languages.

There's a whole long podcasting stats you can find on Podcasting Insights, but that's not the point you are here, right?

As a matter of fact, I'm confident that you know a lot more about podcasting and how it is revolutionizing the marketing industry.

But hey, let's say you need a little more convincing on why podcasting is the BEST option for you, here's an infographic you can digest on (or you can skip all this by scrolling down and get started with hosting your own podcast guide).

The Ultimate Guide To Host Your Own Podcast

1

Figure out your podcast niche

Podcasting business is for real. You need to figure out the type of podcast niche that people might be interested to listen to. Podcasting niche can be both extremely lengthy such as Mixergy's podcast or a short one such as Ask Pat.

2

Getting the equipment ready

If you are just starting a podcast show, you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on podcasting equipment. You can start with the basic one and upgrade them as you progress through the podcasting business. Here are three podcast equipment that you need before getting started:

3

Getting the artwork ready

The next step is to get your podcast artwork ready. There are two options to go around this. Firstly, you can create a free account on Canva and create your own design. Alternatively, you can use Fiverr or Freelancer to hire freelancers to design a professional design for you.

Personally, I use Freelancer because I can create contest (for like $20) and get over 15 designs for me to choose from — which I think is more worthwhile.

Note: Sign up on Freelancer using this link and get at least $10 credit to your account.

4

Recording your podcast

You will nervous as hell when you record your first ever podcast and that's entirely normal! I recommend you to record the podcasts in stages so that you can edit them at a later time. I usually record 15 minutes each time and I can easily merge them later to make a complete podcast. Plus, t is less tiring as well!

Here are some podcast recording tools you should consider using to host your own podcast.

5

Editing your podcast recording

This is the most crucial stage in making your podcast business a success. In order to host your own podcast show that will captivate your audience, you need to edit your podcast recordings.

But wait, why should you edit your podcasts? Isn't being natural is the best?

I got to agree on going natural but the podcasting business is challenging. Therefore, editing your podcast makes it professional at the very least.

Podcast editing can be time-consuming. Therefore, hire a freelancer if you are affordable to. Usually, it takes around $20 to $50 per recording.

6

Publishing your podcast

This is where you 'hit publish!' Publishing your podcast is easy and it doesn't cost a dime. There are two main places where you need to submit your podcast work, which are iTunes Connect and Soundcloud.

Always remember that podcasts are listen by both Apple and Android users around the world. Therefore, making your podcast available for both platforms are critical for your brand visibility.

BONUS: How to market your podcast show?

Host your own podcast is the easy part. Getting the podcast to your potential audience is the challenging part.

Always remember that hosting your own podcast and marketing it is a continuous task!

New & Noteworthy Podcast

Right after publishing your first podcast, you will automatically be featured on the 100 new and noteworthy podcast on iTunes. This feature is only available for the first 8 weeks (or 56 days to be exact) from the date your podcast was launched.
